Creating Creation

What have I been working on lately?  I’ve been asked this several times recently.  So here’s a peek at my latest.

I met Barbara Rosenthal, a pastel artist, in Paso Robles, CA, at her work space in Studios On The Park.  This is a wonderfully inspirational collection of studios right downtown across from the park.  If you have the chance to go there you won’t be disappointed.  Anyway, Barbara gave me permission to translate her work into a quilt.  Soon I was designing the pattern I would need to make Barbara’s image from fabric.  Here’s part of my process.

It took me about 2 weeks to make the pattern.  Then I made an extra copy and colored with crayons just like a kid so I could clearly see which little piece belonged to which element of the drawing.  Without this, I’d just be looking at a flat jumble of lines.  These aren’t the real colors I used, it’s just a tool I created to keep from going crazy.

Here’s part of the construction phase where you can see the piece come to life.

Some of the paper pattern pieces stayed on long enough to give me a  guide for my seam lines.

The top is almost finished now.  It needs some important embellishment to communicate the “stringing” of the planets.  When I finish it I’ll post a picture of it for you.

Barbara’s words: “The planets are almost like beads being gathered for a celestial necklace.”

I have a fascination with images of creation.  Biblical, secular, Darwinian, they all just grab me.

Several years ago I made this quilt on the same subject; creation.  I’m proud to say that Creation Of Man is owned and displayed by a discerning, art collecting couple in Phoenix.

You can’t use up creativity.  The more you use, the more you have.  –Maya Angelou

Your creator would be pleased at your artistry! These quilts remind me of Psalm 8:
” When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
What is man that you are mindful of him?”
