Signs Of Summer

lemonade stand

Several years ago I made a personal resolution to stop at all lemonade stands.

Remember when we were kids and we would set up the infrastructure (card table)

at the best location (the corner)

create a logo and advertise (make a sign or banner and hang it on the front of the table)

and then wait (all day) for the customers to line up?

I was running errands yesterday and what did I see on a busy corner?

True to my resolution, I slammed on the brakes and parked the car at the curb.

A crowd of kids surrounded the stand.  It looked like business was good.  As I approached I heard one of the kids say to the others, “Get away!  Here comes a customer!”  That would be me.  The kids scattered.

I soon learned that the owners of the business were two sisters.  I’ll call them Emma and Jackie since I didn’t get their real names.

Like any good customer, I perused their menu and price list.

At lemonade stands I love to see what’s being offered as incentive purchases.  It’s a rare stand that sells only lemonade.

I hit the jackpot at this one because they were selling avocados!

For 25 cents!

I bought a cup of lemonade (which, by the way, was quite tasty) and loaded up on the avocados.

Here’s another thing I loved about this stand.  Emma and Jackie ran it in the old school, low tech way.  The younger sister, Emma, whipped out a pad of paper and a pencil to total up my purchases while her older sister, Jackie, checked for correctness.  I was patient and let them figure it out for themselves.  These girls were the cutest!

I gave them the money and told them to keep the change.  Their response, “Really?!”

I have to tell you, this encounter made me happy for the rest of the day.  If only I’d see a lemonade stand everyday……..

At my lemonade stand I used to give the first glass away free and charge five dollars for the second glass.  The refill contained the antidote.   —Emo Philips

  2. Very good Val, I enjoy your hayseed

  3. So how many avocados did you buy

  4. Val,

Haven’t seen a lemonade stand in decades. Where I live, the little vendors would get mugged.

    Val ,
You inspired me to do the same
